The History of Crossway Gymnastics
Danson Gymnastics Club approached Trust Thamesmead in 1986 with a request to open a gymnastics centre in Thamesmead. The Centre was created in 1989.
The building was created in Arch 11 Bryon Close, when Crossway got a grant from the Sports Council. Crossway hired builders and converted an empty arch under the flyover into a fully functional gym with the UK's first sprung floor .
The gym was built up with the help of parents and coaching staff who became involved with painting, decorating, fundraising for the equipment, installing a new kitchen and running repairs.
The club has produce 27 regional champions, 1 British grade champion and national squad members.
An ex gymnast represented Britain in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games and one gymnast has represented Britain at a competition in Russia and France in July 2014.
The club has run special needs classes for 25 years for children and adults with learning difficulties and also for the Bexley Down Syndrome Group who have competed in local, regional and national competitions including the Special Olympic GB competitions. One gymnast won 5 gold medals in Leicester and all the club disability gymnasts won medals in their particular sections.
The club has 19 volunteer coaches and 6 qualified club judges.
Crossways is supported by a committee which consists mainly of parents of gymnasts. All coaches, judges and committee members are DBS checked and First Aid trained.
The club runs classes for junior and senior recreational, elite squad gymnastics for girls and boys, special needs classes for children and adults, mother and toddler and adult gymnastics. The club has been involved with Greenwich Council for 20 years representing Greenwich at the Youth Games in general gymnastics, weight lifting and trampolining. The club has been a member of London Gymnastics Federation for 30 years and have had gymnasts represent the LGF at regional and international competitions.
The club has taken part in outdoor displays for both Greenwich and Trust Thamesmead on an annual basis.
The club has taken children home and abroad on outward-bound courses and on team building exercises.
In the 25 years the club has been open we have had approximately 3,000 gymnasts. At present the club has over 100 members. The club also runs courses for beginners during school holidays which is part of the British Gymnastics Award Scheme.
Two of the club’s committee members are also paramedics. In the past Crossways has helped smaller clubs, i.e. Orpington, Europa, Dartford, Blackfen, Fox Gymnastics by allowing them to use club facilities to enable them to move forward in gymnastics.
Around 2010 Thamesmead Trust was taken over by Thamesmead Town. Thamesmead Town then renamed itself Thamesmead Trust.
The new organisation worked on changing the leases that had been issued by the original Thamesmead Trust.
In September 2015 Thamesmead Trust successfully evicted Crossway Gymastics from the building that they had created 1987-1989 with the grant from the Sports council.
